There were two guest speakers:
Newtown and Berhampore Parking Scheme. Paul Barker, WCC Street Transformation Manager, outlined the history of the scheme and the decision making about the extent of the parking restricted areas and the number of permits available. A new year for the scheme was about to start on June 24th, and it was time to apply for parking permits for the 2026-27 year. During the 2025-26 year in the Newtown East area the number of permit applications exceeded the number available, but for the coming year the restricted parking spaces have been increased and all eligible applicants should get a permit.
Resilient Newtown. Graeme Carroll is an Association member with a long history of work focused on climate sustainability initiatives through his company Global Reach Associates. He addressed the meeting describing resilience issues facing Newtown, saying that Newtown is one of Wellington’s most diverse and densely populated suburbs. The suburb faces increasing risks from severe rainfall events, flash flooding, rising energy costs, transport emissions, and Wellington’s significant earthquake hazard. He proposed a community action plan to address these issues – the details are in the full minutes and in his meeting handout, below.
