Minutes of the Newtown Residents’ Association
Monday 19th April at Newtown Hall, Daniell Street at 7.30pm

Safer Roads –
Stuart Bullen presented statistics on speeds, volumes, & accidents since project began
Answered questions on
• Back-up at Daniell lights
• More 40km/h paint needed on roads, yes this will happen
• But govt funding delayed for Berhampore stages of the project
• Newtown west, Hiropi, &Britomart going to council for funding in July
• Roy & Mansfield are arterial so are 50km/h
• Chip sealing on Owen, quality & notice timing
• Removal of carparks in Riddiford St by hospital
• Hump & kerb extension planter layout – Rintoul / Stoke, Harper St

Newtown Festival
WCC sub committee have granted Newtown Festival 3year contract funding
Not as much as we asked for but enough that we are still in business. If we can find some partner sponsors there will be a Fair in 2011…..

Liquor Ban Submission
Monday 26 meeting Newtown Hall to discuss details of a group and individual submissions
5 May = deadline
200 submissions to WCC to date, against City ban because people think drinking in parks & at beaches will be illegal. But Police will only prosecute if misbehaving
‘That this Association support a Liquor Ban for Newtown’ [Tom L / Peter F]
Passed ( just) not unanimous
Sale of Liquor Act running slower than expect

Safety Audit
Association & local retailers met with WCC officers discussed & visited key spots
Library playground fundamentally designed unsafely
Established liaison with Assyrian club
A start…….
Ask for an audit of the road reserve

Southern Cross Hospital Hearing
Steve D submitting on behalf of Association as a witness of an affected neighbour

Gambling Policy Submission
Hearing this Thursday, Kate presenting
